Catherine Person Gallery is pleased to present ‘Transubstantial’ with

painters Gala Bent and Colleen Hayward and  sculptors Renee Zettle-Sterling and Heidi Schwegler.

Transubstantial combines the words transformation and substantial. The exhibition examines

a few holes in our social fabric, ways of transforming and devices for contemplation.

Gala Bent’s subjects are her means of turning chaos into calm. Her deeply detailed figurative work employs

braided hair – her parlance for taming - and incorporates geometrics floating dreamily on a pale background.

In 2009 Bent showed in the Northwest Biennial at the Tacoma Art Museum, Tacoma, WA and she had a solo show

at King County’s Gallery 4Culture in Seattle. She received her MFA from SUNY in Buffalo, NY and is based in Seattle. In addition to her 2-D work, Bent will have an installation in Transubstantial.

Heidi Schwegler’s sculpture explores a wide range of materials in the service of depressing subject matter

and in this exhibition we’re showing ‘Leave When I Ask’. Schwegler’s work has been widely exhibited at the

Tacoma Art Museum, WA and has upcoming exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Craft and the Hallie Ford

Museum, both located in Oregon. Schwegler is a recent recipient of a RACC Individual Project Grant for the

performance and installation of ‘Utopia Sighs’ (Portland, Oregon). She earned her MFA from the University of Oregon

and is presently Associate Professor of Metals at the Oregon College of Art and Craft.

Renee Zettle-Sterling is an artist whose studio practice explores multiple media and techniques in

her intimately scaled sculpture. Transubstantial will feature sculpture from her Devices for Contemplation series.

Her training is in metalsmithing, fiber arts, sculpture and installation work. Her work’s been published in Metalsmith

and American Craft and many of the 500 Series published by Lark Books. Zettle-Sterling earned her MFA in 1997

from Edinboro University, PA and is a tenured Associate Professor of Art at Grand Valley State University, MI.

Colleen Hayward’s minimalist paintings are from a new series of work titled Admiralty Inlet.

Warp and waft is Hayward’s trademark and in this series the monochromatic ink paintings are

sheer as silk. The work was inspired by her time at the Admiralty Inlet beach during a

recent Centrum Residency in Port Townsend, WA. Hayward said, ‘The strong horizontal drag

and vertical pull of inked strokes reminds me of those moments when the tide was pulling all the

water out and yet waves still managed to cross back over and through and break on the beach.’

Hayward earned her MFA at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN in 1977 and lives and

works in Seattle.
